The Alentejo - Gazetteer

Almograve

Almograve is a tiny village which only awakes for July and August. Than there are feasts and theatre on the street, the huge disco opens every night and on the beach the tourists lay close together with hardly half a meter of distance between their towels. If you visit the village out of this alive but also noisy season you find peacefullst everyday life: old fishermen play cards or domino in the cafés and watch the passers-by, housewifes converse with their neighbours and greet tourists friendly, dogs around and love to follow somebody on a walk on the beach. Almograve is situated on the Atlantic coast, 500 m from the beach behind the dunes. It has a bright long beach of fine sand, divided in the middle by a group of rocks. Also the bay is rocky, but one still finds good places for swimming. The impression of the beach is wild and exiting, the sea seems to be wilder than on other places. In the village there are food shops, fresh bread every day and traders bring fresh fish and vegetables. There are several cafés, restaurants and a post office. If you need to go to a bank or visit a doctor, you have to go to Odemira (18 km) or to Vila Nova de Milfontes, a more touristic place, 14 km north. Almograve is nice for calm holidays with long walks on the beach or in the flat country side.
