- The village of Alcarias belongs to the parish of Conceição and may easily be distinguished by its flowers, wooden benches in the streets and by its famous chimneys.
History:
There are no documents that prove the origins of the population, but the vocabulary used in the Alcarias area lets one think of an Arab occupation. The muslim civilisation that got to the Iberian peninsula around 711 A.D., exerted a lot of cultural influence in the south of the country. Besides the vocabulary, the muslims also introduced new techniques of water elevation with a wheel - a good example is the Conceição water mill.
At the time of D. Manuel, the actual parish would have benefitted from the rights and privileges of Messejana's "vila" (town) status; a lot of aristocrats that passed the area would have stayed in Conceição and contributed to its cultural and economic evolution.
